Silverstone, July 1977. A new yellow car sits deep in the field, twenty-first on the grid, carrying an idea nobody else has dared to put on track: a small engine in place of the bigger naturally aspirated units everyone else trusts. The Renault RS01 is the first turbocharged car in Formula One, and at the 1977 British Grand Prix Jean-Pierre Jabouille qualifies it twenty-first before retiring on lap sixteen when the turbocharger fails. It is a debut and a death in the same afternoon — a single car, far back, breaking down early. The paddock barely looks up.

When they do look, it is to laugh. Rival teams nickname the RS01 the “yellow teapot,” because it tends to blow up fairly regularly, usually in a cloud of white smoke. The joke writes itself. A teapot whistles, leaks steam, and is faintly ridiculous — and so, for two seasons, is this car. The joke is also, it will turn out, the last time anyone in this sport underestimates boost.

Chapter I

THE TEAPOT FINDS ITS FIRE

The promise hiding inside the failure is power. The Renault-Gordini EF1 produces 510 horsepower at 11,000 rpm — a serious number for a 1.5-litre engine — even as the car around it stays chronically unreliable, finally scoring its first championship point with fourth place at the 1978 United States Grand Prix. One point, after a season and a half of smoke. It does not look like a revolution. It is one anyway.

The proof arrives in the home colours. On 1 July 1979, at Dijon-Prenois, Jabouille takes the Renault to the first victory of a turbocharged car in Formula One — a wholly French achievement of driver, car, tyres and fuel. The teapot has won a Grand Prix. But the race is remembered for what happens behind him: René Arnoux and Gilles Villeneuve fight a wheel-banging duel for second across the final lap, Villeneuve prevailing by less than a quarter of a second in a battle he would later call his best memory of Grand Prix racing. Two cars, leaning on each other corner after corner, sparks where the bodywork touches — the image that sells the new era before the new era has even fully arrived.

Hold on that contrast, because it is the whole decade in miniature. The history-making fact of the afternoon is the turbo’s first win; the thing people actually remember is the human fight a few seconds back. The turbo era would keep doing exactly this — making the machinery the headline and the men the story underneath it — and the man on the better end of that quarter-second at Dijon, Gilles Villeneuve, would become the face the era is mourned through.

Chapter II

THE ARMS RACE

Once Renault proved boost could win, everyone wanted it, and the numbers turned unreal. By the mid-1980s the BMW M12/13 turbo four-cylinder produced roughly 1,400 to 1,500 horsepower at 5.5 bar of boost in qualifying trim, settling to around 850 to 900 horsepower in race configuration by 1986. These are figures from a 1.5-litre block — engines making more than twice the output of the cars that had laughed at the RS01, from a fraction of the displacement. The mockery had a number now, and the number was obscene. What had started as Renault’s lonely experiment was, within a few seasons, the only currency that mattered: a team without a turbo was a team without a future, and everyone in the pit lane could read the writing on the dyno.

Power that violent does not arrive politely. Drivers described the BMW M12/13’s delivery as like a light switch, the consequence of roughly two seconds of turbo lag that frequently induced sudden oversteer. You asked for the power early, waited through a held breath of nothing, and then it all hit at once — often mid-corner, often with the rear of the car stepping out before you could catch it. The skill of the age was no longer just speed; it was timing the explosion — feeling for the half-second when the boost would arrive and committing to the corner before it did, trusting an engine that had spent a decade being called unreliable. The cars were faster than anything the sport had ever built, and they punished hesitation the way a live wire punishes a careless hand.

Chapter III

THE WAR IN THE PADDOCK

While the engines escalated, a second war ran off the track — between FISA, the sport’s governing body, and FOCA, the alliance of constructors. It reached a truce on 19 January 1981, when the first Concorde Agreement was signed after thirteen consecutive hours of negotiation at the Place de la Concorde, ending the FISA–FOCA war and establishing both revenue sharing and mandatory participation. Thirteen hours in one room to decide who owned the sport — and the document took the name of the square it was signed beside.

There is a particular F1 logic to that: the sport’s loudest fights have always been over money and control, not lap times, and the turbo era’s escalating costs made those fights existential. The peace, when it came, was thin. At Kyalami in 1982 the drivers themselves went on strike, protesting FISA superlicence conditions that would have tied them to a single team for up to three years; Niki Lauda and Didier Pironi stood among the leading organisers, and the drivers were fined between 5,000 and 10,000 dollars for their stand. Weeks later the fight moved to the technical regulations. At the 1982 Brazilian Grand Prix, Nelson Piquet and Keke Rosberg were disqualified for running ballast water tanks of roughly 26 litres that drained away during the race and were topped back up for post-race scrutineering — a way of running the car underweight where it counted, then making the scales tell a different story.

The fallout hardened the lines. Once the Brazilian disqualifications were upheld, water tanks were permanently banned, Alain Prost was declared the winner, and in protest the FOCA teams boycotted the subsequent San Marino Grand Prix. A loophole closed, a result rewritten, and an entire bloc of teams about to stay home — which is how the most haunted race of the era ended up being contested by almost nobody.

Chapter IV

TOSA, AND A SILENCE

Imola, 1982. The FOCA boycott left only seven teams and fourteen cars present, and with the race effectively a Ferrari procession the team ordered its drivers to hold position — yet on the final lap Pironi passed Gilles Villeneuve at Tosa to take the win. Villeneuve believed he had been racing to a settled order; Pironi believed the order was a suggestion. To one of them it was strategy. To the other it was theft.

Villeneuve vowed never to speak to Pironi again, and the two were still estranged when Villeneuve died during Belgian Grand Prix qualifying two weeks later. The vow outlived the man who made it. On 8 May 1982 at Zolder, Villeneuve’s Ferrari struck the March of Jochen Mass at between 200 and 225 km/h; the car flew more than 100 metres before nosediving, Villeneuve was thrown 50 metres from the wreck and suffered a fatal fracture of the neck, dying at 21:12 that evening. The numbers are unbearable precisely because they are so exact — the speed, the distances, the time on the clock.

Why he was on that lap at all has never fully settled. It has been argued that Villeneuve, raw from Imola, was chasing Pironi’s time when he came upon the slower Mass; but accounts differ, and Ferrari engineer Mauro Forghieri stated that Villeneuve was simply returning to the pit lane. The era’s grief and its rivalries are tangled together so tightly that even the cause of the last lap is told two ways.

Chapter V

HOCKENHEIM

The tragedy was not done with the men of that Ferrari garage. In wet qualifying at Hockenheim in 1982, Pironi’s Ferrari 126C2 struck Prost’s Renault and Pironi suffered multiple fractures to both legs — injuries that permanently ended his Formula One career. The same blind spray, the same turbo cars, the same fragile margins that had killed his estranged teammate now took the future of the man who beat him.

The cruelty was statistical as well as physical. Pironi was leading the 1982 championship with 39 points when he was hurt at Hockenheim; he never raced in Formula One again, yet still finished the season as runner-up, just five points behind champion Keke Rosberg. A title led from a hospital bed, lost without ever being contested to the end — the human cost of the turbo years written into the final standings.

There is a terrible symmetry to that Ferrari garage of 1982. Two drivers, one falling-out at Tosa, and within the space of a single summer one of them is dead and the other is finished — both undone in the wet, both in the cockpits of the most powerful cars the sport had yet produced. The boost that made these machines the fastest on earth made them the least forgiving, and the bill came due on the men who drove them harder than anyone.

Chapter VI

THE FLOOR GOES FLAT, THE TITLE GOES HALF

If the politics and the deaths defined the era’s character, a single rule change defined its outcome. For 1983 the regulations mandated a flat undertray, banning the ground-effect technology that had let naturally aspirated cars cling on — and Nelson Piquet won that championship in a BMW-turbocharged Brabham, becoming the first driver to take a title using a turbocharged engine. The teapot’s descendants now owned the sport outright. There was no longer a non-turbo way to win. Six years after the paddock laughed at a yellow car that trailed smoke, the championship could only be won by the thing they had been laughing at. The argument was over; all that remained was to see how catastrophically close the racing could get.

The final act belonged to the closest title in the history of the sport, and to the weather. At the 1984 Monaco Grand Prix, clerk of the course Jacky Ickx red-flagged the race after 31 laps of heavy rain; half-points were awarded, and the leader Prost collected 4.5 instead of the full nine. Those withheld points would decide a championship — which is why the stoppage has never been allowed to rest as a neutral call. Critics noted that Ickx’s decision benefited Prost, whose McLaren used a Porsche-designed engine, while Ickx himself was concurrently the lead driver for the factory Rothmans Porsche team — a conflict of interest the sport argued over long after the rain dried.

The reckoning came at the season’s end. At Estoril, Niki Lauda clinched the 1984 title by just half a point over Prost — 72 to 71.5, the closest championship margin in Formula One history — despite Prost having won seven races that year to Lauda’s five. More wins, more poles, more pace, and still beaten by the smallest fraction the rulebook can award. The half point Monaco took from Prost in the rain was, in the end, exactly the margin by which he lost the world championship.

Coda

WHAT THE SMOKE BECAME

Seven seasons separate the lonely yellow car that broke down twenty-first at Silverstone from the half-point title settled at Estoril. In between, an engine the paddock called a teapot grew into a 1.5-litre furnace making more than 1,400 horsepower, a peace was hammered out across thirteen hours beside a Paris square, and two Ferrari drivers who had been friends were divided at Tosa, then taken one by one at Zolder and Hockenheim. It is a strange shape for a golden age: a breakthrough born of mockery, a sport nearly torn apart by its own civil war, a friendship broken at one corner and two careers ended in the rain, and a championship decided by the smallest number the rulebook can write. Yet that is the turbo era’s real inheritance. It proved that a clever idea everyone dismisses can rewrite the entire sport, and it proved what that rewriting costs when the power outruns everything built to contain it.

The turbo years were the moment Formula One discovered that the cheapest lap time in the world was boost — and the most expensive. The teapot had become a turbine. The era of boost was at full song.
