Autódromo José Carlos Pace

Brazil · 42 grands prix

The Autódromo José Carlos Pace, known as Interlagos, in São Paulo, Brazil, has hosted the Brazilian Grand Prix since 1973. A short, undulating, anti-clockwise circuit, it is famous for passionate crowds and dramatic, often wet races.

The left-hander that opens the lap and plunges downhill, the first half of the S that Ayrton Senna suggested during the 1990 redesign to resolve a safety dispute over the old first corner, and which was named for him.
The right-hand second half of the descending Senna S, a frequent overtaking spot onto Curva do Sol.
A large-radius left onto the long Reta Oposta straight, the Curve of the Sun, named from when the track ran clockwise and the low sun blinded drivers through it. Standing water here pitched Michael Schumacher and others off in the wet 2003 race.
The Lake's Descent, a left dropping toward the circuit's lowest point by a lake. Max Verstappen ran Lewis Hamilton off the track here defending the lead in 2021, and Vettel and Bruno Senna collided here on lap 1 of the 2012 finale.
The second of the downhill left-handers reaching the circuit's lowest point.
The Horseshoe, a downhill right-hander named for its shape, where Mercedes notes overtaking is hard.
The second, downhill apex of the Horseshoe, leading into the circuit's slowest section.
The Little Orange and the slowest point of the lap, tricky in the wet. Sources differ on the name: Mercedes glosses it as the colour, while Brazilian coverage links it to laranjas, slang for backmarkers who erred here.
A flat left-hander named for a small pine tree on the original circuit that drivers used as a braking reference.
The Duck's Bill, a tight hairpin named for its shape. Lewis Hamilton spun Alex Albon out of a likely podium here on the penultimate lap of 2019, took a five-second penalty and called it completely his fault.
The Dive, a fast downhill left-hander and the quickest corner on the lap, taken around 210 km/h.
The Junction, named because it once linked the old banked oval to the road course. Lewis Hamilton passed Timo Glock here on the final lap of 2008 to clinch his first World Championship by a single point.
A left-hand uphill kink taken at full speed, no more than a flick in a modern F1 car; the origin of the name Coffee is not documented beyond the literal translation.
Up to the Pits, a long uphill left-hander of roughly ten percent gradient climbing back toward the start-finish straight.
The wide, fast final left-hander onto the pit straight, named for the packed grandstands. In the wet 2003 race Mark Webber crashed here and Fernando Alonso then struck a detached wheel at around 270 km/h, red-flagging the race.
